Individual 14

Individual 14 is an unidentified man who appears in photos with Individual 5 (who’s cautiously ID’d as perhaps being the same man who’s in a photo with Little Soldier and his presumed wife). Individual 14 is also frequently photographed with individual 13 and individual 15.

Given individual 5’s uncertain link to Little Soldier, individuals 13, 14, and 15’s link to his band is tentative. However, the group photo here labeled “Indians at Salt Lake”, which includes individuals 14, 15, and 16, may also include Little Soldier. (The unidentified man seated on the floor, second from the right.)

Individual 14 and 13 also appear in outdoor photographs of men, women, and children, identified as Shoshones, that were taken by Andrew J. Russell in 1869 during the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad.

These date between the late 1860s-early 1870s, and most (excluding the outdoor pictures) were taken in Salt Lake City.

The high-quality photos come from the C.W. Carter glass plate negative collection, the others from various auction and collector sites.

A collection of documents, excerpts, and photographs relevant to the so-called Weber Ute people of Northern Utah. Not a complete history — research aid only.
