Copied from the Deseret News, September 14, 1850.

Summary: General Order No. 8 is printed — on October 10, 11, and 12th there will be a general muster of the Nauvoo Legion.  Captain Conover and company of Mounted Rifles are to depart from Utah Valley (leaving enough guard to protect the fort), and proceed to Yoab valley to inform themselves of the movements of the Indians in that area.  Captain Canfield will muster his Light Horse at the company parade ground in Weber county, then proceed up Weber Canyon and make themselves thoroughly acquainted with the resorts of the Indians in that area, then return by Box Elder.

“The officers in charge of these detachments with the Indians they may meet, on terms of friendship, and should any property stolen from the settlements be found in their possession, it will be recovered with gentle decision.  All movement calculated to alarm the natives, will be avoided, and unnecessary firing of guns will be prevented.

Correct minutes of proceedings with a description of the country will be kept by each officer in charge of a party and returns thereof made to this office.”
